Gustavo De Moraes, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H.

Gustavo De Moraes, MD, PhD, MPH is Ora’s Chief Medical Officer and Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the Department of Ophthalmology at Columbia University Medical Center, New York Presbyterian Hospital, in New York City, NY. He is a clinician and surgeon with expertise in glaucoma, anterior segment, and general ophthalmology. His primary research interests are in novel techniques for glaucoma diagnosis, endpoints for clinical trials in ophthalmology, and new treatment modalities, both medical and surgical. Based on his research, Dr. De Moraes has been ranked among the top 10 glaucoma experts in the world.

Dr. De Moraes completed glaucoma fellowship at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary (NYEEI) under Dr. Robert Ritch, later directing the Glaucoma Research Unit at the Einhorn Clinical Research Center of the NYEEI. He then held a position as Research Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at New York University Medical Center, New York. He has a PhD in Ophthalmic Sciences and obtained his Masters of Public Health (MPH) with focus on Biostatistics and Epidemiology from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, New York.

At Ora, Dr. De Moraes leads the Medical Safety and Pharmacovigilance team. He also assists sponsors with protocol design, optimizing recruitment and retention strategies, endpoint determination, and discussions regarding regulatory pathways. Moreover, Dr. De Moraes supports Ora’s Research & Development team developing new testing modalities that aim to help develop new endpoints for clinical trials, optimizing signal-to-noise ratio, and reducing sample size and study duration. Dr. De Moraes assists Ora’s network of study sites and investigators (“OraNet”) identifying clinical sites, reviewing their capabilities, and providing real-time feedback on study requirements, patient enrollment, and retention.

Dr. De Moraes is past chair of the Associate Advisory Board of the World Glaucoma Association (WGA) and a current member of its Education Committee. He is past member of the Publications Committee of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). In 2017, he received the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Achievement Award. Dr. De Moraes serves as reviewer in grant review groups of the National Eye Institute (NEI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Glaucoma Foundation (TGF). He is past member of the Columbia University Irving Medical Center Institutional Review Board (IRB), which acts as the ethical committee for research in humans in the University.

Dr. De Moraes is a member of the American Medical Association (AMA), American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), American Glaucoma Society (AGS), New York Glaucoma Society (NYGS), Ophthalmic Laser and Imaging Society (OLIS), and World Glaucoma Association (WGA).

He has published over 200 papers in top peer-reviewed journals and has served in the Editorial Boards of some of the journals with highest impact factor in the field of Ophthalmology. He has authored or co-authored 11 book chapters in Ophthalmology and Glaucoma, as well as the Consensus on Medical Treatment and Consensus on Glaucoma Progression of the WGA. He has given over 200 guest lectures worldwide.

Dr. De Moraes’ clinical research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Glaucoma Foundation (TGF), and Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB).
